The two foundations, and what they do not decide

The material states its deepest claim in two halves and then leaves both of them unworked. This essay takes the halves apart, refuses to draw them as a pair of opposites, and works out what actually follows, which is a short list of things that do not follow.

The claim arrives in a single answer, in the fourth session, and the question that provokes it is the one you would ask. Don has been told no suggestions can be made, so he asks instead: state the Law of One itself.

The Law of One, though beyond the limitations of name, as you call vibratory sound complexes, may be approximated by stating that all things are one, that there is no polarity, no right or wrong, no disharmony, but only identity.

Then the rest of the same sentence.

All is one, and that one is love/light, light/love, the Infinite Creator.

Two halves. I want to be exact, because the usual way of drawing them makes them a pair of opposites and they are not. The first half says what is the case, the second what that case is made of. A statement and its substance, not a light side and a dark side.

This reading is ours, and the corpus is harder to place than we usually admit. In the first session, in an answer to a question that was lost from the record, the contact says that the polarity you can see will be reconciled, and that the distortions producing it are chosen one at a time by each of you and are in no case necessary. We cannot quote it, because our first session survives only in part and we hold no verified record of it. It is also the reason the figure below is a floor and not a pair of scales. A symmetric diagram would assert a symmetry the material never states.

Where the register turns formal

Asked whether there is a first distortion, a second and a third, the contact answers with a count.

Only up to a very short point. After this point, the many-ness of distortions are equal one to another. The first distortion, free will, finds focus. This is the second distortion known to you as Logos, the Creative Principle or Love. This intelligent energy thus creates a distortion known as Light. From these three distortions come many, many hierarchies of distortions, each having its own paradoxes to be synthesized, no one being more important than another.

Ra, session 15.21 · read it at the source

Free will, then the Creative Principle, which is also called love, then the light that this energy creates. Then two sentences that close the question instead of answering it: the count holds only up to a very short point, and after that the distortions are all equal, none of them mattering more than another.

Our judgment, and it is a criticism. This is the one place in the whole chain where the register goes formal. A three-item enumeration that immediately levels its own items is not an argument for the three. It is a way of declining to argue, and it is a good way, because declining to argue is often the honest thing to do. But a material that meant to build an ethics out of this claim would have had to say which of the three governs which, and this sentence does not. Set beside the next section it stops looking like the position and starts looking like a boundary around it.

The claim is a diagnosis, not a demand

The passage that settles the question is late, small, and does not announce itself. It comes in a hundred and fifth session, in an answer about a bodily malfunction before and after the veiling, and every clause has the same shape.

The anger of separation is impossible without the veil. The lack of awareness of the body’s need for liquid is unlikely without the veil. The decision to contemplate perfection in discipline is quite improbable without the veil.

Ra, session 105.17 · read it at the source

Read the middle clause and the last one again. The second is not a spiritual state but failing to register how badly a body needs water. The third is not an aspiration but not happening to sit down and begin a discipline. And the first, the anger of separation, is given exactly the same grammatical standing as the two: impossible without the veiling, unlikely without it, quite improbable without it.

Our reading, and the load of this essay. This sentence is why so much that a reader would want to deduce from the Law does not follow, and the reason is not evasion. A demand presupposes a choice: a person could look at the unity and decline it, and failing to look would then be a fault. This material refuses that supposition, because it gives the failure a mechanism that is not a fault. The veils are a designed condition of this density, and the confusion of the third density is part of what they are for. A claim about what is real has almost no normative content, and this one has been stripped of the sort that would let it become an instruction.

The one thing it does license

The corpus lets the diagnosis become an act exactly once, and here is where.

Forgiveness of other-self is forgiveness of self. An understanding of this insists upon full forgiveness upon the conscious level of self and other-self, for they are one.

Ra, session 18.12 · read it at the source

Read the condition that goes with it, which is in the rest of that answer and which we do not quote here. The forgiveness is required upon the conscious level, of the self and the other-self together, and a full forgiveness is stated to be impossible without the inclusion of self. So it is not a feeling that washes across you, and it is not automatic. It is a determination, made deliberately, in which the person you are forgiving is inside the scope of the act.

That is the whole of it. One act, under a condition, in a corpus of more than a hundred sessions.

Three things a reader would like to deduce, and cannot

First, that nobody answers to anybody. This is the deduction that turns a description of reality into a solvent, and the contact refuses it in the plainest terms available.

Thus one who has set in motion an action may forgive itself and never again make that error. This also brakes or stops what you call karma.

Ra, session 34.5 · read it at the source

Nobody else stops it. There is no judge in that sentence and no schedule of penalties. The being that set the pattern in motion is the instrument that ends it. If everything is one, that is not a reason for you to be outside the arrangement.

Second, that the claim can be turned into a method. Asked whether any way of serving is as good as any other, the answer refuses the generalisation flatly.

Speaking to the intention of your question, the best way for each seeker in third density to be of service to others is unique to that mind/body/spirit complex. This means that the mind/body/spirit complex must then seek within itself the intelligence of its own discernment as to the way it may best serve other-selves. This will be different for each. There is no best. There is no generalization. Nothing is known.

Ra, session 17.30 · read it at the source

Not one way among many, but no way you can be handed. The intelligence required to find it is the seeker’s own and differs for each of them. The claim says you are not separate, and declines to say what follows. The refusal is not modesty.

Third, that the veils were a mistake. The passage above is the answer, and it needs almost no argument. What the veils remove is the anger of separation. That is their whole function, and it is load-bearing, which is a strange sentence to write about something you cannot remember choosing.

And a fourth, which is not a deduction but an inflation, and the commonest of all. The claim does not say you have seen it. Being inside the fact is not the same as knowing it, and a person can quote the fourth session accurately and still be ninety degrees out, because the sentence describes reality and does not report on him. If you want to know what you have understood, the material has better questions.

The claim the material states in one answer in the fourth session, and almost nothing that follows from it. The floor is a single continuous rule, not a pair of opposed poles, because the two terms are one sentence rather than two rivals: the claim of identity, all things are one with no polarity, on the left, and the substance that identity is made of, love and light as one thing named twice, on the right. They meet at a single point, and nothing is drawn beneath the rule, because the claim has no floor beneath it. Standing on the floor is one act that the claim does license, forgiveness of the other-self as forgiveness of self, with the condition stated beneath it that the forgiveness must reach the conscious level and must include the self. Struck through above, the three deductions a reader would most like to make and cannot: that nobody answers to anybody, which the account of consequence in the thirty-fourth session refuses because the being itself stops the pattern; that the claim can be turned into a method, which the seventeenth session refuses outright in saying there is no best way, no generalisation and nothing known; and that the veils were a mistake, which the hundred and fifth session answers by observing that the anger of separation is impossible without them. The whole inventory is one licence and three refusals, and the claim is a diagnosis of how the unity is concealed rather than a demand that anyone should act on it.

What our first session does and does not hold

We planned this essay around the first session and have to report the plan was wrong. The library quotes only what it has verified, and our first session does not hold what we expected.

The audio was reused before the relistening project could transcribe all of it, and what survives is thirteen answers. Ask it what the Confederation’s purpose is and it answers about service. Ask whether one person can accelerate another and it answers that to learn is the same as to teach. The thirteenth answer concerns the instrument, who is tired, and refuses to take her past her capacity. A being declining to be used past what it can carry, that is the posture of declining to tell a reader how to live. It also closes the session, on unity.

What we expected to find, the wording usually attached to this claim, is in none of the one hundred and six sessions we hold. We have looked. So this essay is built on what can be checked: the fourth, the fifteenth, the eighteenth, the thirty-fourth and the hundred and fifth. If your copy runs longer in that first session, the reading here may be missing something, and we would rather know.

There is a rule in that same truncated session, and we can only put it in our own words. Roughly this. If you are not teaching what you are learning, you have done them little or no good. A library that will not quote a passage it cannot check is applying it, and so is one that publishes a reading of a first principle without saying which parts of the reading are the contact’s.

The landing

The two halves are one sentence, and everything in the corpus stands on it. Almost nothing is licensed by it, and that is the finding, not a disappointment. A claim about what is real is the wrong kind of claim to build a life out of, which is why this material is so much better at refusing than at ruling.

Read the claim as a description and it is one of the largest things anyone has said. It removes a category. It says the anger of separation has a manufactured cause, that no one is outside the consequences of what they do, and that forgiveness of the one in front of you is a determination rather than a mood. Those three are enough to build a study group on. They are not enough to build a rulebook on, and a group that tries will end up ranking people, which is the one outcome this material’s method refuses. Why the material refuses to settle things takes it up.

One boundary, and it belongs here. Nothing in this essay is a claim about your state, and nothing in it is an invitation to dissolve a difficulty into unity. A community that used this sentence on someone in real trouble would be doing the thing the hundred and fifth session says cannot happen. The rest of this library is about study and facilitation, and nothing here will counsel you carries the material’s own answer about where a person in difficulty should go.
