Why a framework adopted too early bites

A system of development can be picked up one stage before the capacity to hold it arrives. When that happens the person gains the vocabulary and loses the thing the vocabulary was for, and the material names both the mechanism and the order that prevents it.

By Ishan Parihar, a study community for the law of one material

There is a failure mode in spiritual study that has nothing to do with sincerity. A person takes up a system of development, understands it, can explain it, and is made worse by it. Not because the system is wrong. Because it was adopted a step ahead of the capacity that would let them hold it, and a map that arrives early does not wait. It becomes the person’s description of themselves.

The name for this comes from outside the material. In developmental psychology the mistake is called the pre/trans fallacy, and the observation behind it is that a pre-rational state and a trans-rational state can look identical from the outside. Both refuse to argue. Both claim a direct knowing that has no need of reasons. Both are unimpressed by the conventional mind. A person who has never developed a rational faculty and a person who has gone beyond one are, in this one respect, indistinguishable to anyone who is not paying close attention, and often to themselves.

The material does not use the term. It describes the mechanism, and it describes it better than the psychology does, because it describes it from inside a person’s mind rather than from a chart of stages.

The mechanism, in the material’s own words

Ra’s clearest statement of the problem is a warning about assembling a self out of selected parts.

It is not for a being of polarity in the physical consciousness to pick and choose among attributes, thus building the roles that cause blockages and confusions in the already-distorted mind complex.

Two things in that sentence need taking slowly. The first is that the operation being described is building: the person takes attributes they approve of and constructs a role from them. This is not a neutral mistake. It is a positive act of self-assembly, done with good intentions, usually out of a genuine wish to become somebody better.

The second is the phrase already-distorted mind complex. Ra’s baseline is that a physical-consciousness being is already distorted, which means the material is not warning against distortion as such. It is warning that this particular operation adds blockage and confusion on top of a distortion that was already there. A person who works with what they actually are may be distorted and is at least workable. A person who assembles a role has made themselves harder to work with, and the difficulty is invisible from inside, because the role is composed of qualities they admire.

And the consequence is not that the framework fails to help. It is that the framework stops being a framework and becomes an identity, at which point it can no longer be examined by the person holding it.

The order that prevents it

The material’s own antidote is not a warning. It is an ordering, and it is stated once, in the middle of a session about magical practice, as a summary of the whole discipline of the personality.

The heart of the discipline of the personality is threefold. One, know yourself. Two, accept yourself. Three, become the Creator.

Know yourself, accept yourself, become the Creator. The sequence is the content. Each step is a precondition of the next, and the third without the second is not a faster route to the third. It is a different activity that happens to use the same words.

This is the pre/trans fallacy written as an instruction. Become is the trans-rational step: it renders a person transparent, a servant of all, and on Ra’s account it removes personality in the sense the adept began with. A person who attempts it before the acceptance step has attempted to skip the part where they find out what they are actually made of, and the material’s word for the result is a role: a construction that has the appearance of the destination and none of its substance.

Ra says something similar from the other direction when it is asked to set the order for the group’s own questions.

I will not suggest the proper series of questions. This is your prerogative as free agent of the Law of One having learn/understood that our social memory complex cannot effectually discern the distortions of the societal mind/body/spirit complex of your peoples.

A teacher declining to sequence the student’s work, on the grounds that the student is a free agent. The material is unusually careful about this, and the care is the point. It will describe a structure in as much detail as it is asked for. It will not decide what anyone should do next, because the whole value of a step is that the person took it themselves.

Why the fallacy is so attractive, and where frameworks are useful

None of this is an argument against frameworks, and this community is not going to make one. A framework is a genuine instrument. It gives a person a vocabulary for states they would otherwise only feel, it makes progress legible, and it provides the training that eventually makes the framework unnecessary. The material’s own advice to a student is to choose one and study it deeply, and the reason is that a studied system eventually teaches its own limits.

What this community has found, and this is our reading rather than the material’s, is that every framework has a characteristic failure at its far edge. The system that trains a person superbly at the beginning will produce a specific distortion at the point where its own assumptions stop being examined, and the distortion is usually the framework’s greatest strength pushed past the point where it was a strength. Two we know well enough to name:

  • Advaita Vedanta gives an experiential foundation and trains the disciplines superbly. Its characteristic weakness, in our reading, is an absolutism about the causal realm that eventually acts as a ceiling on catalyst processing. A person taught that the world is ultimately unreal will at some point have to decide what to do with the catalyst a world is still delivering.
  • A great deal of Indian and broader Eastern practice undervalues the gross physical and the psychological while overvaluing the subtle energy body. The result is practitioners with an elaborate inner cartography and a thin capacity to be in a room with another person.

Both observations are ours and both are meant to be argued with. The shape they share is what matters here: a strength becomes the ceiling, and the ceiling is exactly where the pre/trans fallacy operates. A person who has absorbed a framework’s early training and then pushes it past its edge has the framework’s authority in their voice and none of its remaining usefulness.

What this community does about it

Three things, all of them cheap and none of them a rule.

We hold the map lightly, and we say so out loud. A framework is a tool a person uses, and the moment it becomes a description of who they are it has stopped working. The frameworks essay makes the broader case for this; the present essay is about what happens to a person when it stops being true.

We keep the acceptance step in the work. The disciplines are ordered for a reason, and the order is why the balancing review is a review of the self as it actually is rather than an inventory of the self one intends to be. The material’s own account of what the mind has to do begins with finding out what is there.

We treat an unsourced claim about our own states as a sign to slow down. Most of the material’s statements about development are structural and cannot be checked against a person’s experience of themselves in the moment. When a claim can only be verified by the person making it, and the person is confident, that is not evidence of the claim. It is the specific condition under which a role gets built.

The material’s own summary of the discipline is one sentence, and it is the least flattering sentence in the whole system.

Speaking to the intention of your question, the best way for each seeker in third density to be of service to others is unique to that mind/body/spirit complex. This means that the mind/body/spirit complex must then seek within itself the intelligence of its own discernment as to the way it may best serve other-selves. This will be different for each. There is no best. There is no generalization. Nothing is known.

There is no best way. Nothing is known. A framework that had made those two facts uncomfortable to say has already done the damage this essay is about.
