A personality, and not a set of capabilities
The material names its discipline for its object, and the object is a person. That is why the gate in front of the work asks about your honesty rather than your ability, and why a practitioner who could not answer it should not be encouraged to try.

The phrase does the work, and it is easy to miss. The material calls its discipline the discipline of the personality, and most readers who arrive with the word magic already loaded hear a mood where there is a specification. Read the preposition instead of the noun. Not a discipline for the practitioner. Not a discipline that uses anything. A discipline of the personality: the personality is not the place where the work happens. It is what the work is performed on, and it is also what the work produces.
That is an unusual shape for a practice, and it decides everything else this essay has to say.
The object and the tool
The material is asked, directly, whether the magical personality is made up of the three aspects it has named, power and love and wisdom, and whether those are the whole of it. The answer refuses the reduction twice, and the first refusal carries the weight. The three are named, it says, precisely so that attention be paid to each in developing the basic tool of the adept. Then it tells us what the tool is. It is its self.
That is our reading, and it is ours rather than the material’s: an instrument specification and not a metaphor. A capability has parts and a total, so you can list one and count the rest. A self does not. Which is why the material, in the same answer, insists the thing is not three aspects at all but a being of unity, equivalent to what a reader would call the higher self, and at the same time a personality enormously rich in variety of experience and subtlety of emotion. Both at once, and neither reducible to the other.
The heart of the discipline of the personality is threefold. One, know yourself. Two, accept yourself. Three, become the Creator.
The three words that answer is known for are the least of it. The next sentence concerns this essay: the third step renders a being transparent in personality and able to know and accept other-selves. Then the closing line, easy to read past. There is then no personality, in the sense with which the adept begins its learn and teaching.
So one word does two jobs inside a single answer. The work begins with a personality, and its object is the dissolution of that personality in the first sense. You are not building an instrument and keeping it. You are spending one.
The build is long, and it is the same act
What accumulates is not a stock of skills. At 73.10 the material says there is some crystallisation of the centres used during each working, so that the magician becomes more and more that which it seeks. Read the grammar: a fractional improvement, per working, toward something already named, not a threshold crossed once. And at 75.23 the direction runs opposite to the one most readers expect. As an adept becomes more and more consciously crystallised, it gradually manifests more and more of what it has always been since before time. This is disclosure, not manufacture. What is built is not being made.
Put those two together and you get the honest limit of the account, which the material never states. A built personality and an undiscovered one cannot be told apart from the inside by the person carrying either. If the work is a slow uncovering of something always there, no moment arrives at which you can point and say it is finished. The material, otherwise so ready to name conditions and thresholds, supplies no procedure for checking. There is nothing to check.
I have watched people in this community look for that moment. Someone finishes a stretch of work, feels different, and asks the room whether that was it. I have never found the answer in the transcripts, and the honest thing is to say that I do not have one rather than supply a hopeful one.

Why the test is character and not result
This is where the absence comes in.
Asked to define what it means by a crystallised entity, the material says the term carries a fairly precise meaning in the reader’s own language, and then describes a crystalline structure of physical material, its molecules bonded in a regularised fashion. Read that for what it is. The material is defining its own vocabulary, and the definition is an analogy drawn from a structure rather than a description of an adept.
Thus the structure is regular and, when fully and perfectly crystallized, has certain properties. It will not splinter or break; it is very strong without effort; and it is radiant, traducing light into a beautiful refraction giving pleasure of the eye to many.
Three properties. One is structural: it does not splinter. One is optical: radiant, giving pleasure of the eye to many. And one is an absence. It is very strong without effort. That middle property is the load-bearing one, and the only one of the three that cannot be produced by trying.
Now say what that makes of a practice. A discipline normally makes a person better at something, and the improvement is bankable: you can hold the skill and be examined on it. This one describes its own success as the condition under which it is no longer required. An absence of effort is not a thing you can accumulate, hold in reserve, or be shown.
This is also where the vocabulary a reader arrives with turns out to be a misreading. In the register many Indian readers already carry, a crystalline person is a compliment, a level, something displayed, and the crystal sits atop a ladder like a prize. At 73.17 the material says of the green-ray centre that its brilliance does not imply over-activation but crystallisation. A crystal is not a more impressive sand. From inside, the difference is not a feeling of power. It is a difference in what the act costs.
The gate, and what it is actually asking
The practice of magical workings demands the most rigorous honesty.
Read the shape of that condition, because it is narrower than it first looks. It does not ask whether you are skilled. It asks whether your estimate of your own ability is that you can sustain this throughout, and it instructs that as long as you have some doubt it is inadvisable. So the question is not a question of competence. It is a question about the reliability of a self-report, and the only person who can answer it is the person being asked.
When the magical personality is properly and efficaciously invoked the self has invoked its Higher Self.
And here is the structural reason the test can only ever be about character. The mechanism contains no observer. Nothing is called from outside. The self invokes its own Higher Self, and a bridge is made between two configurations of the self. There is no third party at the working and no witness to consult afterwards, so the only report ever available about any working is the report of the person who performed it. The material does not choose to trust that report. It has nothing else.
So, plainly, and this judgment is the community’s and not the material’s: a practitioner who could not pass this should not be encouraged to try. We are not saying the work is dangerous in some vivid and interesting way, and we are not hedging. The material’s own instruction in the doubtful case is to stop. To encourage someone past a condition the source set is not neutral. It substitutes our confidence for their estimate, and the estimate is the only instrument here.
A convergence that is not a merger
The material’s doubt has a shape the Indian traditions know well, and the comparison is worth taking seriously enough to say where it stops. The Buddhist canons treat unresolved doubt as a precondition rather than a stage, and locate it in the practitioner’s own seeing rather than in the adequacy of the instruction. A teaching that could have been better does not dissolve the doubt. Only seeing does. Then the difference, which we hold rather than merge. The canonical doubt is epistemic: uncertainty about a claim, answerable in principle by anyone who has seen. The material’s doubt is about a capacity in the person asking, which is not a question waiting for a true answer but a report, and the report is the finding. Our judgment is that the material’s instrument is the sharper, because a doubt about a claim can be argued with and this one can only be answered.
The objection, and the bill
The strongest objection to everything above should be given at full strength, because a serious reader will bring it and warmth is not an answer to it. An absence of effort cannot be falsified. Anyone can report an inner state. A system measuring only what the candidate says about themselves is a machine for self-flattery, and naming honesty as the gate does not change what is measured.
The answer is not that the claim is unfalsifiable in whatever way happens to suit us. It is that the cost is paid by the practitioner, on the material’s own account, and that the bill arrives.
The portion covered is this: the green-ray activation is always vulnerable to the yellow or orange ray of possession, this being largely yellow ray but often coming into orange ray.
The stimulus for this is the faculty of the will. If the will of yellow-ray mind/body/spirit is that which is stronger than the progressive impetus of the physical death towards realization of that which comes, that is, if the will is concentrated enough upon the previous experience, the entity’s shell of yellow ray, though no longer activated, cannot either be completely deactivated and, until the will is released, the mind/body/spirit complex is caught.
Nobody is exempt from that bill by being unable to report themselves honestly. And the deepest point runs opposite to the objection’s. The material’s instruction in the doubtful case is stop. A reader who doubts has been given a clear instruction, and following it is the whole of the discipline available. There is no examination to pass and no result to publish.
What a reader can do with this
Not the ladder, and not a sequence. The threefold work, with the material’s own note that the third step arrives in its own time. And then the report, which is the only measurement on offer.
We state the gate in full at the magical workings page and do not repeat it. What follows from this essay’s argument is narrower: no one can confer the thing, because it does not transfer. A teacher, a community, or a grade can produce someone who performs a working. None can produce the estimate, and the estimate is the gate. One is built over years and reported on by the person carrying it. The other could be handed over in an afternoon.
