The lower reaches and their inhabitants
What lives in the densities below this one, why the answer is never a list, and the reason nothing down there looks like what it is. The material's account of the reaches is uncomfortable in a way it partly notices about itself, and this essay shows the seam rather than tidying it.

People arrive at this subject through a door that does not exist. There is a picture in circulation, in more spiritual writing than in this material, of a ladder with beings standing on the rungs: something below you, something above you, a ladder you are on. Almost none of that is in the transcripts. The material has no inhabitants in the plural and no ladder. What it has is a graded range, an order of vibration, and a refusal to let any of its maps be taken for the thing mapped.
The first correction is the one people find least satisfying, and it is the one the essay opens on, so let us state it flatly. There is no special term in this corpus for what lies between two densities. I looked for one properly, and the search came back empty: no grey, no gray, no abeyance, no limbo. The popular gloss, that there is a grey zone or a lower astral full of stranded spirits waiting to move on, is not this material’s account. It belongs to a different tradition and has been read into these transcripts by people who wanted something in between. The corpus’s own answer is arithmetic.
The order is vibration, and it is an octave
Asked directly what a density is, the material calls the word mathematical and reaches for music.
The term density is a, what you would call, mathematical one. The closest analogy is that of music, whereby after seven notes on your western type of scale, if you will, the eighth note begins a new octave. Within your great octave of existence which we share with you, there are seven octaves or densities. Within each density there are seven sub-densities. Within each sub-density, seven sub-sub-densities, and so on infinitely.
Seven notes, then the octave. Seven octaves in the great octave of existence. Seven sub-densities inside each, seven inside each of those, and no bottom to the process. This is worth sitting with, because it dissolves the ladder in one sentence. If a density subdivides infinitely, then the thing you would be standing on to look down is not a rung. It is a place inside a scale, and the scale has no low end to stand on.
The order that actually places a being is named directly, and it is not altitude.
Entities inhabit the various planes due to their vibrational nature. The astral plane varies from thought-forms in the lower extremities to enlightened beings who become dedicated to teach/learning in the higher astral planes.
That is the whole account of who is where. A being is in a given reach because of what it vibrates as, and the range runs continuously. Read the sentence carefully and note what it does not say. It does not say beings are graded in importance, and it does not say the range contains a species list. It says what occupies the lower extremities of the astral, and the answer is thought-forms: material that came out of minds like ours. At the upper end it says beings dedicated to teach and learning. The two ends are named by what they are made of and what they are doing, not by how far up they have got.
Figure 01
One octave, ordered by vibration
There is no gap, and this is the load-bearing claim
Asked what level of a density an arriving entity enters, the answer is a sub-density, chosen by vibration in accordance with that entity’s own understanding (session 17.34). Asked how many levels the third density has, the answer is an infinite number (17.35).
So the “between” is not a waiting room. There is no limbo, no queue, no plane where the unqualified wait to be ready. The material’s model is a continuum in which the readiness is the position, so the condition people have a name for is not a place the being is stuck in. It is a description of the being’s own vibration, which is already changing.
The material is also careful, in the way that matters, about how confidently it will speak to any of this. Asked why the densities have the qualities they have, it answers that the vibratory range peculiar to each part of the octave is such that its characteristics can be described with the same certainty with which a person perceives a colour when the eye is working properly (78.18). That is a hedge kept inside a claim. The qualities are knowable, and the knowing depends on an instrument that functions properly. Both halves are the answer.
Nothing down there is what it appears to be
A range of vibration produces a landscape in which nothing resembles itself, and not because the material believes in deception. It is structural. A being is not what it looks like; it is what it vibrates as, and the two come apart constantly.
The clearest place the material shows this working is a question about the tarot, asked by a group studying a constructed system of symbols. The answer does not call the system false. It calls it a form of constructed and organized distortion of the archetypal mind, and says that studying one such form in depth is how a seeker arrives at the ability to experience archetypes at will.
It is appropriate to study one form of constructed and organized distortion of the archetypical mind in depth in order to arrive at the position of being able to become and to experience archetypes at will. You have three basic choices. You may choose astrology, the twelve signs, as you call these portions of your planet’s energy web, and what has been called the ten planets. You may choose the tarot with its twenty-two so-called Major Arcana. You may choose the study of the so-called Tree of Life with its ten Sephiroth and the twenty-two relationships between the stations.
Notice the shape of that. The tarot is not the archetypes. It is a distortion of the archetypes, made by people, and studying it properly is what brings the real thing within reach rather than substituting for it. A system built out of symbols is not the territory and is not nothing.
The same separation runs through the material’s own maps of itself, which is why the vocabulary in these transcripts will not settle. Offered a body called the etheric by one teacher and the astral by another, the material is direct that teachers have used different terms for the same study, and that the naming of these regions was never settled between one teacher and the next:
The light body or blue-ray body may be called the devachanic body. There are many other names for this body especially in your so-called Indian Sutras or writings, for there are those among these peoples which have explored these regions and understand the various types of devachanic bodies.
And the sentence that follows it is the one this page exists to make. The answer goes on to say that the body carries a great many names, and that the writings of this people’s own tradition are where a person would go to find them — and that among those people there are ones who have gone into those regions and can tell the varieties apart. So the material does not merely tolerate competing names for a subtle body. It points at a written tradition that already has them, and it does so while describing a density far above this one.
That is worth sitting with. A passage about the light body is the corpus’s closest approach to an acknowledgement that the Indian material on the subtle body was already there, already systematised, and already known to people who had explored it. It is not a source citation and it is not a lineage claim, and reading it as either would be exactly the absorption this page argues against. It is one sentence, offered casually, in an answer about a different subject.
On the Tree of Life it is equally direct: the stations are not densities, and each station carries its own complex number and shading of energy centres and its own balance (session 44.14). What is refused, across all of it, is the moment a name for a region becomes the region.
The safety question, answered rather than deflected
The question people actually arrive with is not metaphysical. It is whether you are describing things that are around us, and whether that is dangerous.
The material’s account of a being in a body among others is a boundary with specific properties, and it is stated when a questioner asks what happens if an entity simply tries to get through. In session 12.7, asked what would happen to such an entity and to its vehicle, the answer is that the vibratory level of those able to reach the quarantine is such that on seeing the love/light net it is impossible to break the Law. Nothing happens. No attempt is made. There is no confrontation. The only beings able to penetrate the quarantine are those who find a window or a distortion in the space/continua around the planetary energy fields, and the windows are rare and unpredictable.
Read that as an account of its own world, and there is no category of menacing entity waiting outside. The boundary is not defended, because defending is not what happens. What is rare is the window, and rarity is doing the work a wall would otherwise do.
The material is also concrete about where a threat enters, and the answer is not from outside. In the passage on the instrument’s pain, the doctrine is that there is no necessity for negative thought-forms, and that eliminating them removes the possibility of a negative entity using those forms to worsen the complex’s deviation.
There is no necessity for negative thought-forms regardless of pain distortions. The elimination of such creates the lack of possibility for negative elementals and other negative entities to use these thought-forms to create the worsening of the mind complex deviation from the normal distortions of cheerfulness/anxiety.
The boundary is not a wall that gets breached. It is a form that is not there to be used. The access is absent rather than defended, and the access is a thought-form of your own making.
What this community does with that is less than the material would allow. We will not help a frightened person work out what is around them, and we do not do personal work of any kind. A reader who finds this subject genuinely frightening is not served by a stranger’s account of the reaches, and the boundary we keep is described in full on the boundary of this space. The material’s answer is about a boundary, and ours is about who is allowed to stand where.
The seam, and this library’s judgment
Now the uncomfortable part, and it is uncomfortable because the material is not unaware of it.
The categories in this account are the ones a society with a specific shape would think to ask about. The questions that fill these transcripts are questions about a body, about who owns what, about what a person is owed, about power. And the material’s answers to the causes of distortion in this society name the same structure, in the language of having rather than of doing. Asked about the root cause of a disease in this particular society, the answer is not primarily a bellicose action. It is the formation of a money system and an active trading in tendencies toward greed and power, and the consequence is the enslaving of entities by other entities and a misapprehension of the Creator within each entity (session 23.15).
Set that beside the material’s own statement of its first principles, and the picture sharpens. The first distortion is free will, and the second is love, and from these three come many hierarchies of distortion, each with its own paradoxes, and no one of them more important than another.
Only up to a very short point. After this point, the many-ness of distortions are equal one to another. The first distortion, free will, finds focus. This is the second distortion known to you as Logos, the Creative Principle or Love. This intelligent energy thus creates a distortion known as Light. From these three distortions come many, many hierarchies of distortions, each having its own paradoxes to be synthesized, no one being more important than another.
That last clause is the hinge. The material says, in its own words, that no distortion outranks another. Read against the ladder picture, it is a prohibition. A hierarchy of densities, in which what is below is lesser, is a hierarchy, and the material has just denied that hierarchies are the case.
What we hold, and this is the library’s judgment rather than the material’s, is that the corpus knows where its own categories came from and has not fully escaped them. It was produced inside a society organised around having, by people asking questions shaped by having, and it can name greed as the engine of its own distortion while using a vocabulary of vibration and octave that has no place for a social class. Both of those are true, and a reader deserves to see the seam rather than have either half argued away. Nor will we perform the modern correction the corpus does not make. The material is not apologising for its social categories. It is describing them, accurately, and then continuing to work inside them.
So the lower reaches are what they are on this account. A continuum of vibration with no bottom, populated at its lower extremities by the forms thought takes, separated by boundaries that cannot be forced and are only rarely even approached, and described in a vocabulary the corpus itself says is one convention among several. Nothing in that account is what it appears to be, and the part of it that most needs a reader’s scepticism is the part where a society’s map of itself is most likely to have been mistaken for the country.
