The archetypal mind, counted

Sixty-five times in fifteen sessions, and one of those uses is a refusal to define it. The contact offers the archetypes, then declines the definition and asks for the student's observations instead.

The questioner in session 66 asks the obvious question, and asks it well: what are the structure and contents of the archetypical mind, and how does it inform the intuition of an individual complex. It is the cleanest request in the corpus for a definition. And the answer is a refusal.

You must realize that we offered these concepts to you so that you might grow in your own knowledge of the self through the consideration of them. We would prefer, especially for this latter query, to listen to the observations upon this subject which the student of these exercises may make and then suggest further avenues of the refinement of these inquiries. We feel we might be of more aid in this way.

Three things happen in that paragraph, and they need to be separated.

The concepts were offered. “We offered these concepts to you” — the archetypes are not a system the contact is transmitting for the first time. They are a set of references already in the questioner’s hands, given so that the questioner would grow by considering them.

The definition is declined. The questioner wanted architecture and function, and gets neither. The contact says it would rather listen.

The direction reverses. The contact asks for observations from the student of the exercises, and says it might be of more aid that way.

Why this library treats that as the point

The obvious reading is that the contact lacked the words. The better reading is that this is the same refusal it makes everywhere else, and this library has now met it twice.

It declines to name a group of people, because the listener would adopt the answer. It declines to hand over a posture, a breath practice, a mantra, because the faculty that would use it can only be developed by the person developing it. And here it declines to define the archetypes, because — the structure of the refusal is identical — the understanding is the growth. A definition handed over shortens the work; observations made by a student lengthen it.

Two and three take the first refusal up directly, and the essay on silence the second. This is the third instance of one policy, and the pattern is now strong enough to state as this library’s reading: the contact’s most consistent act is to withhold the thing that would make the recipient passive.

What it is used for, when the contact does use it

The term is not a mystical ornament. Sixty-five uses, and they do a specific job: the archetypical mind is the standard against which a complex is measured.

The Significator of Mind, Body, or Spirit is a portion of the archetypical mind and looks as each envisions such to appear. The body of a mind/body/spirit before veiling showed all the signs of aging which acquaint you now with the process leading to the removal from third-density incarnation of the mind/body/spirit complex.

Ra, session 105.19 · read it at the source

That passage does something no other use in the corpus does. It applies the term to appearance — the Significator is a piece of the archetypical mind, taking on whatever form each viewer brings to it. And then it turns the measurement on the body, describing the pre-veiling complex as already showing the signs of ageing that the reader knows as the process of removal from incarnation.

So the archetypical mind is not a higher self to aspire to. It is a reference condition, and a complex is described as a partial expression of one. That is why the material can speak of a distortion without the word becoming a condemnation: a distortion is a deviation from a standard the complex is already an expression of, not a failure to reach a state it was never built for.

Where it comes from

The questioner in 78 supplies the origin and the contact confirms it flatly, in the shortest answer in the corpus.

This is quite correct.

Ra, session 78.13 · read it at the source

That is the material’s whole account. The archetypical mind is the product of the previous octave — the harvest of the last cycle — and this galaxy uses and acts upon it under the first distortion of free will. Not designed in this galaxy. Brought in, and put to work by choice.

It is worth sitting with what that makes the archetype. It is a thing from a completed cycle, being used imperfectly in an incomplete one, by beings whose free will is the distortion that makes the use imperfect. Every feature this library calls a distortion is then, on the material’s own account, a faithful use of something old by something new.

What the material does say, and what an earlier version of this essay denied

An earlier version of this essay opened this section by saying the material does not list the archetypes in a system and does not say how many there are. That was false, and it is the clearest instance yet of a claim about an absence made without a count.

Measured over the archive’s 106 sessions and 2,632 records, 15 name or number the archetypes, and five treat them as a system or set. Asked directly for the greatest and the fewest number in use by any Logos, the contact answers with both:

The fewest are the two systems of five which are completing the cycles or densities of experience. You must grasp the idea that the archetypes were not developed at once but step by step, and not in order as you know the order at this space/time but in various orders.

Ra, session 91.17 · read it at the source

So the corpus does number them, does give a range, and does describe their development as step by step and not in a single order — different Logoses have used different systems.

What survives of the earlier claim is narrower and worth keeping. The material does not give the number. It gives a floor and it declines the ceiling the questioner proposed, and 91.17 says the ordering is not fixed — so a reader wanting a canonical list is asking for something this corpus does not contain. That is a real limit, stated about a real question.

The questioner offers a reading at 67.28 — the Father archetype as the positive aspect of electromagnetic energy, the Mother as its negative — and the material does not ratify it. That the questioner supplied a structure and the contact declined to confirm it is itself a finding, and it is the same pattern as 66.21: a reader formulates, and the material declines to certify. But it is a declined confirmation, not a declined system, and the essay should not have turned one into the other.

It also does not say whether the archetypical mind is a mind at all, in the sense this community uses the word — and the same measurement catches a second overstatement here. An earlier version said it is never described as having experiences. Seventeen records link the archetypal to experience, awareness or consciousness: 67.30 has the seeker “experience each archetype”, 67.28 calls the archetypical mind that which contains all facets which may affect mind or experience, and 78.37 gives the name Experience to Archetype Four. So the corpus speaks of the archetypal in the vocabulary of experience quite freely.

The part that does hold is the narrower one. Searched across the same 2,632 records, zero call the archetypal mind a soul. That silence is real, and it is the one this essay’s reading depends on: the material is willing to say the archetypes are experienced and never willing to say they are someone. The community’s own language of a mind that knows itself is ours, and this is one of the places where keeping it ours matters. It is the product of an octave, it is the measure, and it looks as each envisions such to appear.

Given

A measure, not a level
The Significator of Mind, Body, or Spirit is a portion of the archetypical mind (105.19). A complex is a partial expression of a standard it already answers to, which is why a distortion is a deviation rather than a failure.
From the previous octave
The product of the last cycle, used by this galaxy under the first distortion of free will (78.13). Not designed here. Brought in, and put to work by choice.
Applies to appearance
It looks as each envisions such to appear (105.19) — so the term governs how a complex presents as much as how it acts.
The left column is the question a reader would want answered and the material declines. The right is everything the corpus supplies, which is enough to use the phrase correctly and not enough to define it — and that is the figure's point rather than a gap in it. Drawn as a fork because the refusal is structural: the same policy governs this answer, the refusal to name a group of people, and the refusal to hand over a technique. The three uses on the right are the material's; the claim that they constitute one policy is this library's.

The one honest problem with this essay

This is a hole in the library and the hole is not closed by this page.

The contact offers the concepts and declines to define them, and the natural place to look for what they mean is the tradition the terms come from. This library has no framework for it — there is no Jung page among the fourteen frameworks — and until there is one, a reader who wants to know what the archetypes mean will find that the material does not say, this library does not say, and the tradition they come from has an answer nobody here has written down.

That is a real gap and it is on the list of work, not a footnote. The site would rather show the reader the shape of the gap than cover it with a borrowed definition.
