The lattice, and the gift that is outside it

Two claims this material never stops making and never puts in the same sentence twice. Something about your life is already decided. Something about your choosing cannot be taken. This is the essay for the reader who has read carefully and does not believe it.

There is a claim here about the shape of a life before you arrive in it, and a claim about what you may do once you are here. The first says the outcome, the route, the lessons and the limits are already in place. The second says whatever you choose cannot be chosen for you. Both are stated as fact, in the same voice, in answers that do not know about each other.

This essay does not find the sentence where the two are tied together, because there isn’t one. It gives you the shape of the unresolved thing instead, because a reader who tidies this has stopped studying it.

One word first. The material does not use the word lattice. It describes the determined part in the vocabulary of a chart and a road. Lattice is ours, and we use it because a grid says what we mean and the material’s own word does not: continuous, ruled, no opening in it.

The part that is already decided

Asked how intelligent infinity became individual at all, the answer starts with an act of choosing.

The intelligent infinity discerned a concept. This concept was discerned due to freedom of will of awareness. This concept was finity. This was the first and primal paradox or distortion of the Law of One.

Read the grammar, because the argument of the whole material sits in it. The first thing described is a free act, and what it produces is a limit. Finitude is not imposed on a freedom already there and then restricted. It is what a freedom produces when it acts. So free will is upstream of the structure rather than a permission granted inside it, and the two claims are one claim seen from its cause and from its product.

Here is the determined side at full strength. A questioner asks whether the higher self, having worked through the lower densities, might know what a given life requires and steer toward it. The answer is that this is incorrect, and that such knowledge would be an abrogation of free will. Having refused the premise, the same answer describes the higher self as a chart rather than a driver: the destination is on it already, and the road in was surveyed before the journey. What the higher self may programme is the lessons and certain predisposing limitations, and only that. Everything left over belongs to the entity’s own choosing.

Put plainly: the route is not yours and the remaining choices are. Asked whether total free will is balanced so each individual has an equal opportunity on the two paths, the answer is a flat yes. The route is fixed. The polarity of the walk is not.

The gift that cannot be taken

The material does not describe free will as a choice among options set out in front of you. It rules that out, in the first of the three disciplines.

It is not for a being of polarity in the physical consciousness to pick and choose among attributes, thus building the roles that cause blockages and confusions in the already-distorted mind complex.

Ra, session 5.2 · read it at the source

So the disciplines are the disciplines of not choosing: find the impatience under the patience, then balance every charge with its equal. If you cannot select your own qualities, what is left is not a menu. It is the capacity to hold what you find, including the parts you did not choose, without discarding any of it.

The material says so in the one place in the transcripts where somebody asks for exercises to be published.

It is important to allow each seeker to enlighten itself rather than for any messenger to attempt in language to teach/learn for the entity, thus being teach/learner and learn/teacher.

Ra, session 15.13 · read it at the source

The sentence is about method, and about much more than method. In the same answer the material says that learning on the asker’s behalf, rather than with the asker, would tip the balance toward the distortion of free will. The gift is protected by being made undeliverable, and the party enforcing that is not the seeker. It is the source.

This is where the first distortion gets corrected, and the framing is genuinely the material’s own. The material lists free will as the first distortion of the Law of One, the origin every other distortion springs from, and it is the only claim in the corpus it protects absolutely. It protects it by refusing. Asked to publish exercises that would help, it declines on the ground that helping in that way is taking the choosing away. A teacher who does that has given nothing. The refusal is the gift, which is why our discipline essay carries no technique: the argument there is the argument here.

Asked whether any way of being of service is as good as any other, the material says the best way is unique to each complex, that the complex must find its own discernment as to how it may best serve, and then refuses the generalisation three times over.

Speaking to the intention of your question, the best way for each seeker in third density to be of service to others is unique to that mind/body/spirit complex. This means that the mind/body/spirit complex must then seek within itself the intelligence of its own discernment as to the way it may best serve other-selves. This will be different for each. There is no best. There is no generalization. Nothing is known.

A rule would have said which way was best. This does the opposite: the only route to your own best action is yours to find, and nobody has it, the source included. The same gesture appears at the largest scale the material has. Asked to describe the archetypal mind, it declines, confirms the concepts were offered so the student might grow in knowledge of the self, and says it would rather hear the student’s observations.

You must realize that we offered these concepts to you so that you might grow in your own knowledge of the self through the consideration of them. We would prefer, especially for this latter query, to listen to the observations upon this subject which the student of these exercises may make and then suggest further avenues of the refinement of these inquiries. We feel we might be of more aid in this way.

The essay on the archetypal mind takes that refusal up at length. What belongs here is why it has that shape: not a limit of the material’s knowledge, but a refusal to deliver the product of knowing in advance of the person it is for. Fuel, not conclusions.

Where the two are in tension

So here is the tension as the corpus leaves it. A chart exists and is complete. A thing on it cannot be reached by any road on it, and cannot be given away by anyone standing on it or off it. The material asserts both and never asserts them together.

One sentence reaches across. In the seventieth session the questioner proposes that the higher self might manipulate the incarnate complex toward a goal. The answer refuses, says the force of free will is paramount, and then names this pair as a seeming contradiction and says it falls away once you accept a true simultaneity.

The essay's two claims, drawn so that nothing joins them. On the left, the lattice, a ruled field of the determined part: the outcome already set, the route already surveyed, the lessons and limits assigned, each cell closed and continuous, with no opening in the field for anything to arrive through. On the right, well outside the field's outer edge, one open circle standing for the gift, labelled as outside the lattice and reachable by no road in it. A single dashed line runs from the field toward the circle and stops short, and the one filled mark in the drawing is where it stops, because that is what the corpus does with the single sentence it offers about the pair. Below the dividing rule, the essay's refusal: the two are never joined in the material, and the library's position is to hold both and not solve them. The word lattice is this library's coinage; the material does not use it, and the figure's title and labels are our reading of a structure the material states rather than names.

Here is what that sentence does. It is the only place in the run where the two claims meet, and it does not resolve them. It names a condition and moves on. The term recurs three more times, and each of those is about time rather than this pair: parts of a being living experiences at once, the seeding of galaxies without sequence. Not one of the four develops the reconciliation it was offered for. A reader who supplied the tidy would be supplying a doctrine, not reading a corpus.

What it costs to hold both

Here is the cost, in the register where it shows up. In a session, somebody arrives who wants two things at once: to be told they are on a road they did not choose, and to be told their choosing is theirs and cannot be taken. Those cannot both be said out loud without the person hearing whichever one they came for. Say the first and you have parked them. Say the second and you have implied the road can be rerouted by wanting it to, which this material will not support.

The material’s answer is to stop talking, with a consistency easy to mistake for evasion. It will not suggest the proper series of questions to a group, on the ground that choosing the questions is the asker’s. Nothing arrives, and the person promised something receives a faculty.

It is necessary that each being use free and complete discernment from within the all-self which is at the heart of the mind/body/spirit complex.

Ra, session 12.10 · read it at the source

That is the whole of what this material thinks it has the right to hand you, and it is not information but a capacity, located inside the one who uses it, and the one thing here that cannot be published, sold, inherited, or transferred. If you want the corpus’s conclusion about your own life there is not one, and not out of modesty. A conclusion handed to you would be the imbalance of free will, in the exact form the material named when somebody asked it for the exercises.

Our own reading, and where we come down

The strongest outside map for this shape is integral theory, and this library already carries a page on it. Integral holds a determined framework and a free chooser at once without the tension, by locating both in an absolute with no time and no sequence in it. It is coherent, and it is also precisely a resolution, and the resolution is not in the source.

So we take the material’s side and refuse the tidy, and say why. What a resolution of this kind buys is coherence, a real good, and what it spends is the reader’s ability to stand inside an unresolved thing without flinching. For a community whose practice is discernment, that is the wrong trade. The map’s own limit is named on its page here: integral describes development and declines to say what it is for. What it is for in this essay is a choice, and a theory that will not say what the choice is for cannot resolve this without quietly deciding the question it was brought in to settle.

That is our judgment, not the material’s, and a reader who thinks the tidy is right is not thereby wrong about the material.

What is left open is the finding. The chart is real and it is not yours. The choosing is yours and it is not on the chart. The corpus states both, plainly, in answers that do not know about each other, and across a hundred and six sessions never brings them into one sentence. That is what it means to say the pair is unreconciled in the source rather than in your reading of it, and it is why we hand you the faculty, not the answer.

One Greek word does two incompatible jobs in this material, naming the intelligent principle everything comes out of and also naming the second distortion of the Law, which is a created being that can get things wrong.
