Library Practice

You meet what you carry

The community's conversations keep a distinction between the dream and the astral that most writing on the subject collapses. The material's position is narrower still, and its answer to the protection question is not the one anybody expects.

This is the subject the community is asked about most often after meditation, and it is the one where this library has the least to offer. Both of those need saying plainly, and the second one is why this essay exists.

The ordinary material on astral travel is written by people who teach it. It promises a method, a schedule of practice, and results that scale with effort. What this community has is one person’s account, and the account opens by declining the authority the genre assumes. The community’s own note on the subject begins by saying that they have not experienced astral travel in much depth, and then offers the metaphysics instead of the experience.

That is an honest position, and it shapes everything below. What follows is not a technique. It is a taxonomy, two limits, and one doctrinal point that turns out to matter more than any practice.

Two realms, only one of them yours

The community’s conversations keep a distinction that almost everything written on this subject loses, and the distinction is where the whole subject turns.

The dream happens in the mind complex. It is the mind’s own territory, which is why its contents behave as they do: a place can exist there that exists nowhere else, because the place belongs to the mind’s geography rather than to anything else. Lucid dreaming, on this account, is the practice of making that territory fluid and pliable, and the claim attached to it is that a thinner veil is itself progress. The dream essay treats the same claim from the side of recall.

The astral is not yours. It is given as part of the inner planes, a layer of the creation rather than a property of one mind, and it is described as sitting between space/time and time/space. The description of travelling in it is deliberately mundane. The world correlates with the physical one, in its places and in the sequence of its events, and what changes is not the scenery but the company. Meeting a non-physical entity stops being difficult, and manifestation becomes immediate.

The material names the body this happens in, and the community’s metaphysics checks out against it. Session forty-seven works through the bodies by ray, and when it reaches green it gives the name.

This is a lighter body packed more densely with life. You may call this the astral body following some other teachings. Others have called this same body the etheric body. However, this is not correct in the sense that the etheric body is that body of gateway wherein intelligent energy is able to mold the mind/body/spirit complex.

The community describes leaving the body as occurring in the green-ray energy body, and that is what the material says. It also draws a line the popular literature does not. The etheric body is named by some traditions for this same vehicle, and Ra says that is a different thing, the gateway body in which intelligent energy moulds the mind/body/spirit complex. Two bodies, two jobs, and one naming confusion that has been running for a century.

Who is there

Every account of the inner planes arrives with a list: discarnate souls, guides, ancestors, guardians, wanderers, and the various things one is told not to approach. The material does not give a list. It gives a rule about lists, and the rule is more useful.

Entities inhabit the various planes due to their vibrational nature. The astral plane varies from thought-forms in the lower extremities to enlightened beings who become dedicated to teach/learning in the higher astral planes.

The range matters more than the vocabulary. The astral plane is not divided into species; it is graded by vibration, and at the lower end what is there consists of thought-forms, which means material that came from minds like ours. At the higher end it is entities dedicated to teach/learning, which is to say beings.

That single sentence explains the shape of this subject, and it explains why the genre’s confident taxonomies are so unreliable. A person who cannot yet tell a thought-form from a being will meet their own material and receive it as an external message, with all the authority that implies. The community’s own counsel arrives at the same place from practice rather than doctrine: the difference between the fabric of the dream and the fabric of the astral is learned by doing, and once it is known, decoding what you already carry becomes easier too.

One observation here is ours and not the material’s, and the mark matters. Forms that have no place left in a physical ecology may persist in subtle ones, because a thought-form does not go extinct the way a species does. It is a plausible reading of how thought-forms work in this material. The transcripts do not make the claim.

What the material offers as protection

This is where the material parts company with everything else written about the subject, and where the community’s conversations are at their best.

The first thing to say is that the popular question — what ritual protects me before I go? — is answered with a refusal. The astral body is already protected, and the community’s note says so. What needs protection, if anything does, is the navigation. A person is not endangered by the fact of leaving; they are incompetent at where they go.

The second thing is the material’s actual doctrine, and it is not a technique at all. Ra states it while discussing the instrument’s pain, and the sentence relocates the entire question.

There is no necessity for negative thought-forms regardless of pain distortions. The elimination of such creates the lack of possibility for negative elementals and other negative entities to use these thought-forms to create the worsening of the mind complex deviation from the normal distortions of cheerfulness/anxiety.

The doorway is not in the astral. It is in the mind the person carries there. A negative entity does not require a breach of any boundary; it requires a thought-form of your own that it can use. Remove the form and the access is gone, not blocked but absent, because there is nothing to reach through.

Which means the protection practice this material warrants is the unglamorous one: the disciplines, and specifically the balancing review that the meditation essay puts in front of all subtle work. You do not armour the doorway. You decline to leave a doorway in the wall.

The material’s own recorded incident makes the same point in the plainest possible way. Session seventy-two describes an attempt by a negatively oriented source to cause the instrument to leave her physical body, and the response was nothing like a banishing.

The instrument, with no pause, upon feeling this greeting, called for the grounding within the physical complex by requesting that the hand be held.

Ra, session 72.5 · read it at the source

She asked someone to hold her hand. That is the whole of the countermeasure: the grounding of the physical complex, requested by the person themselves, by means of another person’s touch. No circle, no invocation, no protection object. A hand, a body, and a second person in the room.

We have not found a better rule for this subject anywhere, and it is not a rule about the astral at all. It is the material’s general answer to a threat to the subtle body: come back into the physical, and do it with someone.

What this community will not do

We do not teach astral travel, we do not certify it, and we do not lend our name to a course that does. The reason is not caution about the practice. It is the boundary the essay on the arts sets out: the material declines to systematise the bodies, since a full account would be the work of many sessions and the naming varies between teachers, and a community that produced its own curriculum anyway would be doing the thing the material refused.

The sources the community names for this territory are books and teachers, and readers who want them will find them easily. What this community can offer is the distinction, the doctrinal point above, and one caution.

The caution is the pre-trans problem, and it is the reason this subject has casualties. Vivid and occasionally overwhelming inner experience can arrive well before the psychological capacity to integrate it, and subtle practices are the fastest way to buy the first without the second. A practitioner can become extremely fluent in the terrain of the inner planes while the patterns that run their ordinary life remain untouched, and the fluency reads to everyone involved, including them, as progress. The three domains essay takes that apart.

One more thing follows from the material’s account of the will that catches an entity at death. The faculty that keeps something in place is wanting. A practitioner who goes looking for the inner planes because they want a better world than this one is carrying exactly the attachment Ra describes, and the essay on death follows that thread to where the material puts it.

What is left, if you take all of this seriously, is unflattering. The astral body needs no protection you can buy, the beings there are graded by what you are rather than by which name you invoke, and the countermeasure for a real threat is a grounded body and a held hand. Explore it if you are drawn to it. Begin by knowing what you are carrying, because on this subject more than any other, that is what you will meet.
